During the 1980's, older teen mothers were more likely to have higher incomes, lower rates of marriage, more nonmarital births and lower rates of abortion compared to young mothers. In addition, the total percentage of teenage births accounted for by older teen mothers increased. Teenage mothers were more likely to live at home with a live-in boyfriend or domestic partner.
Logistic regression analysis confirmed that increased teenage childbearing has been primarily for older teen mothers and a large increase in teen pregnancy rates during the 1980's has been the consequence of an increase in older teenagers, and particularly younger teen mothers as well.
Some countries have shown a significant decline in abortion rates, such as Taiwan (Chen, 1983). Other countries have not shown much change. Here are five other examples of countries that have shown no change in abortion rates in the past ten years: England, Finland, Denmark, Italy, and Japan. Countries that have shown an increase in abortion rates in the 1970's include India, Brazil, South Africa, and Nigeria. Large decreases in abortion rates were observed in Jamaica, Peru, and Israel, as well as some smaller countries, such as Finland and Sweden (Table 1). d2c66b5586
